Neptune Radar was formed in 1983 by the present directors. This occurred
during the closing stages of a 6-year £1 million research project at the
University of Birmingham into the application of HF Radar technology to the
remote sensing of sea surface conditions and at the outset of a 10 year
investigation of HF radar capabilities by the UK Ministry of Defence costing
several £ million.
The founder and principle consulting engineer is Mike Moorhead who has been working with HF radar systems since 1972 and with HF communications systems since 1970. He is one of the UK experts participating in the EU COST251 action.
The Company is internationally known for contributions in the fields of remote sensing of oceans by HF Surfacewave Radar and the analysis of data from HF Skywave Radar and Ionospheric Sounders.
Neptune Radar has devoted much of its time to top level consultancy projects in support of HF Radar systems for both commercial and military use. The Company is widely experienced in HF system design, engineering & operation including site selection and - for skywave Radar - co-ordinate registration and frequency management systems.
As a result of its cooperation with the Universities of Birmingham and Sheffield, Neptune has been able to refine the emerging surface wave HF Radar technology and successfully establish its PISCES Sea State radar system, which has been in operation on the South-West Coast of the United Kingdom for nine years.
